JESSIE REYEZ SHUTTER ISLAND

Armed with only a scuzzy sounding guitar, there are few artists whose voice alone can carry a song as effortlessly as Jessie Reyez’s on ‘Figures’. Now the Canadian talent has returned with the similarly striking ‘Shutter Island’. As with 'Figures', ‘Shutter Island’ has a refreshingly sparse accompaniment which allows her incredible voice to take centre stage. The track is steeped in attitude and soul, and with lyrics as raw as "my straightjacket’s custom made, with f*ing diamonds” there seems to be no stopping Reyez. The track takes its name from the dark 2010 Scorsese film, a link which is made all the more explicit in the accompanying video which features Reyez chained underwater in a Damien Hirst-style tank. Within the mere days since its release Shutter Island has already picked up support from Elton John, and is Zane Lowe’s World Record. Stay tuned to Reyez’s soundcloud page for more to come soon. -HM
